Everything You Need to Know About Argan Oil
Argan oil is an exclusive oil that originates from Morocco. It is entirely plant-based and produced from the seeds of the argan tree. This golden oil is very expensive compared to other oils, as it takes 35 kilograms of dried fruit, or no less than 100 kilograms of fresh fruit, to produce a single litre.
It's not for nothing that Argan oil is called Morocco's 'liquid gold'. The argan tree helps combat desertification and was on the verge of disappearing towards the end of the 20th century. Thanks to the oil's popularity, Morocco aims to have planted 50,000 hectares of argan trees by 2030. The country's export of the oil tripled between 2010 and 2020, contributing to many new job opportunities within the women's cooperatives that produce it.
From cooking to beauty oil
It has been used as a cooking oil in Moroccan cuisine for hundreds of years, but in the late 20th century, it quickly gained popularity for its properties as a beauty oil and an ingredient in cosmetic products. Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, and is used both as a hair oil and in anti-ageing skin products. Cold-pressed oil is the type used in beauty products, while kernels intended for cooking are roasted before being pressed.

A nutrient-rich oil
Argan oil is rich in vitamin E, which is beneficial for the skin, as well as antioxidants and 80% essential fatty acids. It also contains phenols that help counteract the DNA damage that can be caused by free radicals. The carotenes found in Argan oil are converted into vitamin A in the body, which supports healthy skin, healthy eyes, and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Argan oil for the face and skin
Proponents of argan oil claim it can be effective against eczema, acne, and psoriasis. So far, there is limited research to prove the positive effects of Argan oil, but one interesting study suggests that combining oral intake with topical use can achieve visible effects for skin health. “The effect of dietary and/or cosmetic argan oil on postmenopausal skin elasticity (2015)” found that after 60 days of consumption combined with topical application of Argan oil, the women in the study observed increased skin elasticity. A major advantage of argan oil is that it doesn't clog pores when used on your face.

Argan oil for hair
Argan oil is a common ingredient in hair oils used for damaged, dry, and frizzy hair. The oil contains linoleic and oleic acids, which help to strengthen the hair and maintain its shine. Argan oil is very concentrated as it is not diluted or treated, so only a few drops are needed for each application. Using too much can make the hair appear greasy.
Both nutritious and delicious
Argan oil is an excellent ingredient in cooking and has been used for hundreds of years. It is rich in the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6 and is said to support digestion and the normal function of the immune system. As Argan oil contains a high proportion of beneficial fats, it can be advantageously used in diets that recommend high levels of healthy fats.
