Everything you need to know about food supplements for pregnancy

Are you pregnant or trying to conceive? Questions about food supplements for pregnancy, such as folic acid and omega-3, are common. We're here to help you sort through some of your queries.

Rarely in life do you receive so much advice and information about what to do, think, eat, or avoid. The list can seem endless. And rarely are you so thirsty for information. It's all because you want to give your unborn baby the best possible start in life.

Folic acid and Omega-3 are two key products that often come up when we at Great Earth talk about food supplements for pregnancy. But you might not be entirely sure what they're good for.

Folic acid is a B vitamin that is ideally taken before you plan to become pregnant and up until the 12th week of pregnancy. It is most beneficial during the early stages of pregnancy.

Folic acid has a role in the process of cell division and contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. It is also important for reducing the risk of neural tube defects in the foetus and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue in the mother.

“Our folic acid also consists of methylfolate, which is a readily absorbed form of folic acid,” says Rebecca Hedström, Product Manager at Great Earth. “You only need to take one tablet a day, and of course, it’s vegan, like many of our other products.”

Next, let's talk about Omega-3. The first thing that might come to mind are the recommendations to avoid certain types of fish due to potential heavy metal content.

But you can rest assured, Great Earth's omega-3 is vegan and sourced from microalgae grown on land in a pure, controlled environment, which means it is completely free from heavy metals and other contaminants.

“The algae are rich in the fatty acids EPA and DHA, which contribute to the normal function of the heart, brain, and vision. This makes it especially important to supplement with Omega-3 during pregnancy, as maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus and breastfed infants.”

And remember, try to live as normally as possible, but take extra special care of yourself by reducing stress, eating more vegetables and other delicious food, and making sure you get plenty of rest.
