Great Earth is the first to introduce a menopause policy
The menopause and the difficulties many women experience receive far too little attention. That's why Great Earth, as the first Swedish company, has introduced a menopause policy.
– You should be able to storm out of a meeting if you have a hot flush, or turn red as a tomato even when you're sitting still.
18th October is World Menopause Day. Despite three out of four women experiencing menopausal symptoms that affect their lives on multiple levels, the menopause is discussed far too little in general – and even less so in the workplace. That's why Great Earth has introduced a menopause policy, elevating women's health in our workplace to a higher level.
– We believe the workplace plays a crucial role in normalising the challenges women face during menopause. In addition to educating our entire staff about menopause, we offer extra support to our female employees experiencing severe symptoms.
– We hope more companies will follow our lead to normalise menopause and its challenges.
Great Earth's menopause policy is aimed at all employees who are, will be, or are close to a woman going through menopause and may be experiencing troublesome symptoms. The policy means that we will:
1. Educate everyone
Menopause affects everyone — therefore, all employees will receive education on what happens when a woman's hormone levels change and the different phases of menopause begin.
We market products designed to ease the discomforts that menopause can bring, so it's vital that we within the company have a solid understanding and self-awareness of the body's hormonal phases. This enables us to advise our customers, develop products in this area, and run campaigns that focus on the issue of menopause.
2. Normalise the symptoms
We will respond to an employee's symptoms with acceptance instead of silence. It should be completely normal and accepted to:
Storm out of the room just because you need some air
Feel that 'brain fog is setting in' and be allowed to say so
Cry a little for no reason at all
Quickly take off your jacket when a hot flush hits
Turn as red as a tomato even when sitting still
3. View health holistically
Great Earth encourages all its employees to view health as a whole, where diet, rest, nutritional supplements, sleep, and exercise are important. Above all, everyday movement during normal working hours is encouraged.
4. Spread the word!
Information and knowledge empower every individual, and we want women to be empowered to manage their menopause through knowledge. Therefore, we want to use our platform to raise awareness about menopause.
5. A dedicated menopause advocate
Without a clear responsible role, things often don't get done. In our case, the responsibility for implementing and driving the work with the menopause policy lies with our HR manager.
Good Life — Great Earth, a good life nourishes a better world – for both people and the planet. When we feel good, we simply have a better capacity to make the world a slightly better place. In our pursuit of being a Great Workplace, the well-being of our employees is paramount, and we want to address all aspects of health through life's stages with decisiveness, openness, and integrity.
