Whether you're planning your pregnancy well in advance or are already pregnant, there are a few things to be extra mindful of, as your body's needs change completely.

Besides eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and exercising regularly, it's important to pay extra attention to what you consume. For example, a supplement of

– If you're planning to become pregnant, you should start taking a folic acid supplement now. It's a B vitamin that plays an important role in cell division and helps prevent neural tube defects in the baby. Folic acid should ideally be taken before you become pregnant and then up until the twelfth week, says Rebecca.

Despite three out of four women experiencing menopausal symptoms that affect their lives on multiple levels, the menopause is discussed far too little in general – and even less so in the workplace. That's why Great Earth has introduced a menopause policy, elevating women's health in our workplace to a higher level.

– We believe the workplace plays a crucial role in normalising the challenges women face during menopause. In addition to educating our entire staff about menopause, we offer extra support to our female employees experiencing severe symptoms.

A couple of years ago, I started experiencing flu-like symptoms and terrible muscle soreness. I felt really unwell and began to withdraw from my family and friends; I thought I was heading for burnout. I was sleeping poorly, found it hard to focus, and felt mentally sluggish. I no longer had the energy to exercise, and that's when my major identity crisis hit.

Exercise is part of my job and also my release. I started asking myself questions like: who am I without my training? And how can I be a personal trainer if I don't even have the energy to do strength training myself? It was only when I read Monika Björn's book 'Strong Through Menopause' that I began to understand the connection. It was during this period that I was asked to join a test panel with Klimakterieportalen (The Menopause Portal). I was given supplements of 

 and the turnaround came after just three months. My body responded surprisingly well – I could start pushing myself again when I trained. My sleep fell into place, and I recovered better. My fitness isn't quite back to where it was, and I can still lose focus sometimes, but it's so much better, and I'm functioning normally again. There's some confusion around the different phases of menopause, largely because the Swedish term 'Klimakteriet' covers the entire process. In English, however, it's typically broken down into three, sometimes four, phases. The following three-phase model is widely accepted and helps us understand what happens during these periods.

During perimenopause, hormones can fluctuate significantly. This usually begins in your 40s (but can start as early as 35). Many don't realise their symptoms are linked to perimenopause because we simply don't talk about menopause enough.

This phase lasts for an average of four to seven years. Symptoms are often caused by a condition known as oestrogen dominance – an imbalance between oestrogen and declining progesterone, which, among other things, makes ovulation less frequent.

When you have been period-free for 12 consecutive months.

During menopause, oestrogen drops to permanently low levels, which can lead to more (and sometimes more intense) common menopausal symptoms. Many women suffer through this period because they don't get the help they need. Symptoms related to menopause are common from the late 40s to the 50s, and periods become less frequent until they stop completely.

Menopause — the final menstrual period — occurs on average at the age of 51.4. The levels of the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone drop significantly, and some women experience severe symptoms during this time.

The rest of your life (after your last period)

For some women, life after menopause is something to look forward to. You no longer have to worry about periods, sanitary products, or contraception. However, menopause can bring about more permanent changes in your body. For some, sleep disturbances continue post-menopause and may require treatment to get back on track. For others, vaginal dryness remains a problem.

After menopause, the risk of other health conditions can increase. It's important to monitor your body and attend regular check-ups.

The 3 Phases of Menopause

Sleep problems and troublesome symptoms from muscles and joints are not uncommon for women during menopause. Together with the experts at Klimakterieportalen, we tested the effects of food supplements related to these issues.

In collaboration with Klimakterieportalen, we conducted two test panels: one focusing on sleep and the other on muscles & joints. For 4-6 months, the women in the two panels took food supplements and regularly evaluated how they felt.

At the end of the sleep test period, 32 women (91%) reported an improvement of varying degrees compared to how they rated their sleep problems before starting the food supplements. This positive result was observed among the test panel participants after just two months.

The test period for muscles & joints lasted for six months, and the results showed that 26 women (84%) rated an improvement of varying degrees at the end of the test period compared to how they rated their discomfort before starting the food supplements. This positive result was seen among the participants after just three months.

The product kit for muscles and joints consisted of: 

To qualify for the test panels, the women had to have sleep problems or muscle and joint discomfort that began in connection with menopause. Participants had to be in good health and not taking any medications whose effects could be influenced by food supplements. Before the test period began, all participants filled out a form where they rated their perceived discomfort. After two and four months, they filled out similar forms again. No compensation was provided, and they could choose to withdraw at any time.
