The most important vitamins and minerals for a healthy pregnancy

Congratulations! Pregnancy is a wonderful time in your life, but it can also be a time of many questions and concerns. One of the most important things you can do to take care of yourself and your baby is to ensure you're getting all the nutrients you need. In this article, we'll take a look at some of the key vitamins and minerals for pregnant women, and how you can make sure you're getting enough of them.

Why are vitamins and minerals especially important during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant changes to support your baby's development. You need more of certain nutrients, such as folic acid, iron, calcium, and vitamin D, to ensure your baby gets everything they need to grow and develop healthily.

Vitamins and minerals for a healthy pregnancy:

  • Folic acid: This B-vitamin is vital. Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. It is recommended that women take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, ideally starting before they become pregnant.

  • Iron: Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, and to normal oxygen transport in the body. Pregnant women need more iron than usual, and a deficiency can contribute to tiredness and fatigue. Good sources of iron include meat, fish, beans, and iron-fortified foods.

  • Calcium: Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. Pregnant women should aim for 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and tofu.

  • Vitamin D: Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium. Pregnant women should get 600 IU of vitamin D per day. Sunlight is a good source of vitamin D, but you can also get it from certain foods and food supplements.

  • Multivitamins: A multivitamin supplement can be a good way to ensure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need during pregnancy. Discover Multi Gravid HERE.

  • Consider taking a multivitamin supplement designed for pregnancy.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Exercise regularly, as advised by your healthcare provider.

  • Listen to your body and rest when you need to.
